Here’s an interesting story by our member, JettyRobot. It’s about duct cleaning for fire restoration

Duct contaminated by smoke

Duct contaminated by smoke

The whole HVAC duct system of a 4-level office building had been damaged by fire. Consequent results were large contamination of the whole ducting by dust and an omnipresent smoky smell from the fire.

Even though the traditional cleaning methods such as rotary brushes with chemicals had been suggested as a potential cleaning method, it had turned out its use would have too many risks. The building’s ventilation systems are assembled underneath the ceiling panels and inside the walls, thus, a potential leakage would damage the whole historical structure of the building. These risk considerations resulted in a decision to use a dry cleaning method.

A suitable solution was found in the combination of the use of Dry Ice Blasting and the JettyRobot technology which had a particular advantage being the robot’s ability to apply the cleaning method in ducts of all shapes (rectangular, square and circular). Moreover, the fact that dry ice blasting cleaning is efficient on the whole duct’s surface is essenti

al since to completely remove the smoky smell all parts of the duct must be cleaned properly.

SInce the contamination had not been too resistant and the main focus was to remove the duct’s smoky smell layer, only half a kilogram of dry ice per minute was used.

The project realisation was funded by insurance, however, both the customer and the insurance company appreciated that the whole cleaning process has been monitored and recorded in detail. Consequently, there were no delays or complications with indemnity.

The whole HVAC system was cleaned in 3 days time. The smoky smell, as well as the dust contamination, were properly removed from the system.
